Here’s a quick post to send out a music theory worksheet that you will find helpful.
Intended student
This exercise is appropriate for beginning adults and older students. It is not particularly meant for young students.
Concepts Covered
This worksheet is an introduction to the concept of scale degrees in the major scale. It asks students to see the relationship between the C Major 5-note scale and the G Major 5-note scale.
The first section asks the student to notate the indicated scale degree in C major on the bass clef.
The next section provides notes from either the C major or G major five note scales and asks the students to identify what scale degree each note is in the key specified.
Explanation of concepts
A “scale degree” is the number of the note in order of the scale. Better put, in a C major scale (notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C), the scale degrees are as follows:
| Note Name | Scale Degree |
|---|---|
| C | 1 |
| D | 2 |
| E | 3 |
| F | 4 |
| G | 5 |
| A | 6 |
| B | 7 |
| C | 1 |
Note that scale degrees are written as digits with a caret (or hat of circumflex) above the number. To get a font that will allow you to type scale degrees, follow this link here.
Teaching Goals
Introduce students to the idea of thinking in scale degrees.
Introduce the student to the simple transposition of C major to G major and vice versa.
Practice recognizing notes from C position or G position in bass and treble clef.
Familiarize the student with the notation of scale degrees. It is indicated with a ^ above the number.
