What’s involved in private lessons?

You will typically take one lesson per week with your instructor. Each lesson is tailored to your individual goals, interests, and learning style. Lessons include:

Music theory and technique: Build a strong foundation to understand what you play and develop good habits.

Repertoire:

Learn pieces that match your level and interests, from classical to contemporary styles.

Sight-reading and ear training: Develop skills that help you become a well-rounded musician.

Performance skills:

Gain confidence and expression whether you play for yourself or for others.

Just like a college class, lessons are only part of the learning process—you are expected to practice regularly between lessons to make real progress. Consistent practice is key, and you will get clear weekly assignments and goals to guide your home practice.

How much do I need to practice between lessons?

Regular practice is essential for progress.

Beginners should aim for at least 15–20 minutes a day, 5–6 days a week.

As you advance, longer and more focused practice sessions are encouraged.

A healthy practice routine that fits your schedule is recommended. Your instructor will help you develop a practice schedule to suit your needs. They will also assist you with troubleshooting any problems that arise.

What ages are accepted for lessons?

Students of all ages are welcome, from young beginners (typically age 5 and up) to adults. Lessons are always adapted to your age and experience level.

For young students who might not be ready for private lessons, your instructor will gladly guide you on the matter. Instructors will discuss with you the appropriate path – whether to try lessons or advise you on how to best prepare your student for lessons when they are ready. Just ask!

I’m ready to start lessons, what should I do next?

Your goals will be discussed, your questions answered, and you will receive guidance to start your musical journey.

We can’t wait to hear from you!

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons are $60 per 55 minutes if paid on a per-lesson basis. You can also buy a package of 4 lessons for $200, saving $40 compared to single lessons.

Do I need to own a piano to start?

No, not at first.

Eventually, regular access to a piano or a full-sized, weighted keyboard is necessary.

An acoustic piano is ideal. However, a high-quality digital piano or keyboard can also work well. This is especially true for beginners and intermediate students.

You do not need to have an instrument to start lessons, however.  Your instructor can teach you while helping you shop for an appropriate instrument within your budget. There’s plenty to learn while you are shopping!

What if a lesson needs to be missed?

If you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Make-up lessons are offered when possible, according to studio policy. If you are unsure, please ask!

What safety and privacy measures are in place for lessons?

Lessons take place in a dedicated, comfortable studio space. A safe, welcoming environment is maintained for all students and families. If you have any concerns or special needs, please communicate them in advance or at any point. We welcome your feedback!
